MIDLAND COUNTY FAIR, A NEW TWIST ON A BLAST FROM THE PAST

You may have heard the saying “Everything Old is New Again.”  This is proving to be true as organizers work feverishly to put the finishing touches on the first Midland County Fair in over 40 years.  The fair is not new to Midland County, but chances are it will be new to the majority of attendees this year.

Why bring back an event that hasn’t been done in such a long time?  That is a great question, and one that organizers are eager to answer.

“The Midland County Fair is structured to educate, inform and build morale.  We strive to showcase talent, wares and promote cohesiveness and unity.  In these fast-paced times it is easy to live in a community and not know your neighbor.  The Fair also provides an opportunity to slow down, and enjoy great food and fun entertainment, all while celebrating our past, present and future,” says Bo Zertuche, Fair Coordinator.

Through competitions and educational opportunities, organizers hope to honor traditional skills such as canning, baking, and quilting – introducing them to generations who can take up and carry on the traditions, while at the same time highlighting more modern activities that can be appreciated such as video gaming competitions, karaoke competitions, and much more.

“The County Commissioners recognized the need for an event that would bring citizens of the county together and provide fun for the whole family,“ commented Dr. Zan Matthies, County Extension Agent – Agriculture and Natural Resources.  “We are excited that the Midland County Fair is returning to the community and that diversity in Midland will be celebrated through the fair.”

The mission of the Midland County Fair Committee is to produce a FUN, high profile, high quality annual fair providing a diverse and memorable experience in a wholesome, family-friendly environment while cultivating and nurturing a cohesive spirit of community.

An underlying theme for organizers is education.  The belief is that activities at the Fair can be a fun way to educate attendees on ways that the past can be applied to the future.  Consequently, an appreciation will be created that will ensure the rich heritage of Midland is passed on.  Organizers are also committed to creating a scholarship fund with proceeds from the event to assist with the education of Midland County students.

“Education is the key to our future and we believe this scholarship fund will become the signature outcome of the County Fair,” Zertuche said.

The Midland County Fair is scheduled to take place August 19-22 at the Midland County Horseshoe Arena.  For more information, please contact Amber Bass at 432.682.1300 or visit www.midlandcofair.com
